Ayurvedic Treatments for Chronic Sinusitis

Sinusitis occurs in a person when the tissues lining the sinuses get swollen or inflamed due to bacterial, viral or fungal infection. In majority of cases, it is found among persons whose immunity is weak. A person suffering from sinusitis may have symptoms like nasal congestion with nasal discharge, swelling around the sinuses, fever, headaches, sore throat, bad breath, cough, facial pain, fatigue, sneezing, itching, etc.

Types of sinusitis

  • Acute Sinusitis Occurs due to viral infections or seasonal allergies where the patient shows symptoms like runny & stuffy nose along with facial pain that remain for at least 10 to 14 days.
  • Subacute Sinusitis - Occurs due to bacterial infections or seasonal allergies in which the patient can take up to 3 months to recover properly
  • Chronic Sinusitis - Occurs in a person in which his nasal polyps/sinuses grow or when the lining of his sinuses gets swollen due to bacterial infections. Its symptoms are less severe; however, the patient can take up to 2 months or more than that to recover
  • Recurrent SinusitisPatient suffers numerous attacks in a year.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Various Sinusitis

Nasyam: It is the best treatment for people suffering from sinusitis. In this, the therapist puts drops of medicated oil one-by-one into each of the nostrils of the patient. This process also involves a vigorous sinus massage and medicated steam inhalation that altogether clears the accumulated kapha or mucus from the nose and sinus passages. In all, this panchkarma therapy helps heal the nose and sinus region, and promotes the movement of energy in these areas.

Jalneti or Nasal Cleaning: This nasal purification ayurvedic treatment cleans the nasal passages by removing the mucus from there. It also reduces the possibilities of recurrence of sinusitis. It effectively brings relief in conditions like cough, cold, headache and sinusitis.

Dhumapana with Haridra Churnam: Inhaling the smoke of burnt piece of dry turmeric helps clear the nasal pathway and lessens mucus.

Vaman: In this treatment, the kapha toxins accumulated in the body of the patient are removed through controlled and medically-induced vomiting. The process provides relies in nasal discharge, sinusitis and kapha fever.

Steam Inhalation: Boil the water in a vessel along with herbs, such as Tulsi (basil) leaves, mint leaves, ginger, camphor, clove and eucalyptus oil, cinnamon, etc. (as per the prescription). Closing the eyes, inhale the steam deeply and slowly for at least five minutes. It can be done twice or thrice a day to reduce nasal congestion.

Apart from these treatments, doing pranayamas like Anulom Vilom, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika and Suryabhedi alongside yogasanas, such as Sarvangasana, Bhujangasana and Uttanasana are also recommended for greater results.
